Today we celebrated the Feast of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop. St Mary holds a special place in the Church in Australia, becoming Australia’s first Catholic Saint in 2010. She also holds a special place in our local parish community as the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the order of nuns which was established by St Mary MacKillop have had an active presence in the Sunbury community for over 100 years.
The relationship between Sunbury and the Sisters of Saint Joseph began with Fr John Gallivan (patron of Gallivan House Team) who in 1915, asked the order’s headquarters in Sydney for sisters in Sunbury. The sisters' presence has continued ever since and still continues today with Sr Jose Noy who still supports our parish community, living in the convent building on Macedon Street built for the original group of nuns over 100 years ago.
Sr Jose was our guest of honour this morning and we had the opportunity to wish her a happy feast day.
